Courthouse News: Woman Insists She Didn't Rob Bank
AUSTIN (CN) - After two men robbed a bank, a woman says, the Austin American-Statesman and KVUE TV defamed her by publishing her photo and accusing her of the robbery. Renesia Taylor says she had been in the Guaranty Bank for legitimate purposes on the day of the robbery and left before the robbers arrived.
Taylor demands punitive damages. She says the bank knew or should have known that its accusations were false before it reported her to the police. In addition, she claims the media stories not only defamed her, they threatened her life.
The bank in Austin was robbed on July 29, 2008.
The American-Statesman allegedly defamed her in an October 10, 2008 article.
Defendants Texas Cable News and KVUE allegedly defamed her in a February 18, 2009 broadcast and on Web sites.
Taylor is represented by Aspen Dunaway in Travis County Court.
